Saudi Arabia and Iraq agree to re-open their Arar border crossing for trade for the fist time since 1990 when ties were cut following Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait. Saudi and Iraqi officials toured the site Monday. The governor of Anbar province said troops had been deployed to safeguard the desert route leading to Arar. On Monday, the Saudi cabinet decided to establish a joint trade commission with Iraq.

DEBKAfile: Both Saudi Arabia and the UAE have welcomed visits to their capitals by the influential Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadar in recent weeks as part of their effort to curtail Iran’s influence in Baghdad and the region.
