The UN-backed Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Seraj said on Sunday he would like Russia to mediate between his government in Tripoli and Khalifa Haftar, who rules the eastern region, to help overcome the divisions among the warring militias and an Islamist State threat.

Seraj's Government of National Accord has been trying to formulate plans for unifying Libyan security forces since arriving in Tripoli in March, but has made little progress. Last month, Haftar was given a tour of a Russian aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean in a show of Moscow’s support. Seraj is expected to come to Moscow soon.
