UK Prime Minister Theresa May was forced Monday to delay the opening of the newly-elected Parliament and the traditional Queen’s Speech for laying out government policy, although the prime minister was able to hold her first post-election cabinet session. The Queen’s Speech was originally scheduled for next Monday. The cabinet is in fact divided over UK strategy in the up and coming negotiations for its exit from the European Union. Snags have also cropped up in talks with the North Ireland’s Unionist party (DUP) for a deal to shore up May’s minority government on crucial votes in parliament. Although the prime minister’s authority is seriously challenged in her party and the country at large, her resignation might catapult the country into a new election, which no one wants, and risk power passing to the opposition Labor and her leading rival Jeremy Corbyn, which may convince her party to leave Theresa May in place for as long as she lasts.
